DEET- Effects on Health

July 27, 2017

We recommend using our essential oil's on your skin as opposed to using chemicals on your skin.

Essential oil's are plant-based and have been used through the centuries for all kinds of health remedies.

We recommend using Pirate's Secret Essential Oil di Thief for mosquito and other pest bites and Pirate's Mist for a bug spray and deterrent.

And here's why: This post (taken from Wikipedia) explains the problem with the side effects of using DEET on your skin.

"As a precaution, manufacturers advise that DEET products should not be used under clothing or on damaged skin, and that preparations be washed off after they are no longer needed or between applications.[19] DEET can act as an irritant;[7] in rare cases, it may cause severe epidermal reactions.[19] Other symptoms that can occur are breathing difficulty, burning eyes, headaches.[20]

In the DEET Reregistration Eligibility Decision (RED) in 1998, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reported 14 to 46 cases of potential DEET-associated seizures, including 4 deaths. The EPA states: "... it does appear that some cases are likely related to DEET toxicity," but observed that with 30% of the US population using DEET, the likely seizure rate is only about one per 100 million users.[21]"

What is in DEET? And other chemical repellents ?

"N,N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide, also called DEET (/diːt/) or diethyltoluamide, is the most common active ingredient in insect repellents. It is a slightly yellow oil intended to be applied to the skin or to clothing, and provides protection against mosquitoes, ticks, fleas, chiggers, leeches, and many biting insects."

The Solution is to use our Vegan, Plant Based, Pirate's Secret Essential oil di Thief when you get a bite to help with the itching, and use Pirate's Mist to help deter pests in the first place.
